What is kennel cough?

Kennel cough is a respiratory infection, also known as infectious tracheobronchitis. Dogs typically cough persistently after being exposed by the bacteria/virus and have an inflamed throat.

What are the symptoms of kennel cough?

  • Runny nose
  • Coughing – sounds very throaty or like they are hacking up something
  • Retching
  • Gagging

How do dogs get kennel cough?

Dogs can catch it from organisms (either the virus or bacteria) in the air, direct contact with contaminated dogs, toys, bowls or other surfaces. Dogs can catch this anywhere but it can be common at places where they are around other dogs like dog parks, doggie day care, kennels, etc.

Can my dog get kennel cough more than once?

Yes, unfortunately they can.

Can my dog be around other dogs?

Kennel cough is contagious so it is recommended that your dog stay away from other dogs for two to three weeks to avoid spreading it.

What are the treatments for kennel cough?

It is important to visit your vet when your dog develops symptoms. You dog can be prescribed antibiotics such as Clavamox.
